PINO FORASTIERE

CIRCOLARE
Forastiere (Accordature Aperte - 2006)

After “Rag Tap Boom”’s raid in the world of rock, Forastiere’s acoustic guitar moves southwards, goes back in time and discovers the worth of melody. The result is a story, a kind of ‘concept album’.
“CIRCOLARE” might be called more ‘Italian’ than the first one; its most profound musical influence has Latinroots. The track “Nordamerica”, despite its title, hides a Brazilian forro’s rhythm.“Moresco”, the final piece both of the record and of an ideal Mediterranean Suite featuring the last four pieces, acquires a Middle East tinge, which can be perceived very often in southern Italy’s popular music. The longest and most complex piece of the album, “Dominic”, is dedicated to the talent of the guitarist-composer Dominic Frasca, New York experimentalist of the minimalist scene. “Circolare” and “Lo gnomo” come from an ironic and affectionate revision of classical guitar literature. “In.Out.” and “Ripresa” are two ballads, while “Intro” and “Full” are a rock tribute.

The record ends with a video track, the new version of “Hidden 7”, already in “Rag Tap Boom”. The video was directed by Francesco Raganato (Ganga, 2005). The design project of the album is by Danilo Selvaggi.

RAG TAP BOOM
Forastiere (S3L - 2003)
“RAG TAP BOOM” is Forastiere’s new original project: a 13-track record that explores the various possibilities of acoustic-guitar solo composition (S3L – 2003).
The total lack of whatsoever prejudice towards most musical genres, and the virtuosity which best expresses itself in the form of a notation which is strictly ‘allergic’ to any kind of improvisation, are two features to which the unique style of Forastiere’s guitar art owes a great deal. The result is a personal synthesis tinged with inheritances. His classical studies were essential both for the instrumental technique and for the compositional structure of the pieces. Some traces reveal the thorough listening of a certain kind of jazz of the 60s. Influences come also from the cultivated as well as the folk Brazilian music, still able to renew, as it has done for more than a century, its charming, extraordinary rhythmic patterns. Some unmistakable quotations hint at a broadly recognizable rock background, but they prevail “mainly because I envied the power of sound”.
Last but not least, or maybe right on top of the list of the precepts, there is the great teaching of Michael Hedges. Through technical devices such as tapping, muting, hammer on off, the percussive use of the guitar’s wooden parts, and most of all the invention of open and alternate tunings, Forastiere in his notation and musical execution has developed a complexity that augments the instrument’s sound levels.

On June 2006 the Italian label 3Lune Records releases "WAG - World Acoustic Guitars vol.1" , composed of 17 selected tracks for travelling around the world of contemporary acoustic guitar and its techniques fingerstyle, tapping, flatpicking, flamenco, classical.
17 wonderful musicians from different contries (Italy, Spain, Argentina, United States, Canada, Germany and Sweden) participate to the collection. Among the most elegant contemporary fingerstyle players, we meet Alex de Grassi, Peter Finger, Don Ross, Franco Morone, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Del Vezeau, while as representative guitarists of “mixed” technique and genres we find Forastiere (rock-blues), Sergio Altamura (folk-ethnic), Dominic Frasca (minimalism), Billy McLaughlin (tapping), Antonio Forcione (with a powerful articulated blues of “acoustic revenge” as last track of the album). Beppe Gambetta, in duo with the bassist Glen Moore, plays a fandango dance in flatpicking.
From the Latin musical world, amazing tunes are played by the virtuoso duo of Luis Salinas with Tomatito, and of Jordi Bonell with Dani Perez, followed by the precious dreaming jewel of Vicenç Solsona;  then the performance of the Italian Michele Ascolese trio offers a tribute to his neverending source of inspiration, Latin America. Last but not least, the Swedish duo of Mats Hedberg & Christer Häggner describes a suggestive Scandinavian landscape. 70 minutes of great music that guitar lovers cannot miss, discovering all the chances that this extraordinary instrument gives.
